Magnetic Sensors
The Basic Force
The idea of living on the surface of huge magnet was never quiet appealing and it wasn’t until some strange behavior by magnetic materials that forced us to completely believe it. Considered to be one of the basic forces of the Universe, Magnet & Magnetism have a concerted affect on our everyday lives. Right from the day the ancient shepherds realized that a special type of stone attracted the nail attached to their sticks, magnet and magnetic forces have continuously provided us an assortment of entertaining and life essential gadgets.
Magnets and Magnetic fields exist around us at every moment. There is no escaping the forces of magnetism as long as you exist in this universe. Yes the effects may be strong or weak but the forces are always watching you. It is amazing to know just how useful the magnet has been to us and just how innovative we have been in utilizing the magnetic properties to perform a variety of our activities. Let me give you a rough idea about the use of magnets in daily life. The car dynamo, the television tube, the magnetic sensor loud speaker, the microphone, the ceiling fans, the refrigerator, the magnetic sensors, the airplane, the ship’s gyro, the magnetic sensor healing mats, the electricity generator plants. Phew! The list of uses of Magnetic Sensors is never ending; we can go on and on and end up with almost nothing that has been left untouched by the magnetic sensor. That’s absolutely right! The world today is made up of magnets and is totally dependent on the magnet to run itself. Period.
The Field of a Magnetic Sensor
The basic properties of a Magnetic Sensor emanate from the field that it generates. These imaginary lines emanating from one end of the magnet(called pole) and form a loop with the second Pole. The poles are aptly named North and South Poles since the Earth’s magnet also lies in the North –South direction. Any magnet suspended in air with a thread will always point towards the North South directions.
Ancient explorers made good use of the North / South pointing properties and charted their Sea explorations based upon the magnetic swing. The Magnetic Sensor has numerous applications to offer to us and realizing this potential, we have incorporated the magnet in every walk of life. Therefore, it was logical to utilize this magnificent material (magnetic sensor) and its properties for our Security Systems. This gave birth to the Magnetic sensors for detecting activities crucial to us and our environment.
How does a Magnetic Sensor Work?
The basic Electromagnetic (EM) system and Magnetic Sensors, which are being used by various stores and Libraries to prevent theft consist of a small, strip with Magnetic Sensor properties and this strip can be attached to the goods offered by the stores. The best part of a Magnetic Sensor is the liberty with which one can magnetize and demagnetize Magnetic Sensors. Thus the Magnetic Sensors are magnetized while they are the property of the shop and Magnetic Sensors are demagnetized(deactivated) while selling the product.
The next generation Magnetic Sensors (switches) and Magnetic Alarm Switches have reformed very basics of home security monitoring and reporting. The utilisation of magnetic properties in conjunction with available Magnetic Sensor switch and Alarm technologies have completely overturned the way a security system was being conceived and designed. The ability of a Magnetic Sensor to create flux and the effect it has on the adjoining switch during opening or closing of door gives birth to the Magnetic Sensor Switch.
Advancements and Future Perfect for Magnetic Sensors
Magnetic sensors have just made an inroad into the Safety and Security Systems domain. The aptitude of Magnetic Sensor materials to amalgamate with any other system has opened the door wide open. In Smart Home Security solutions - where it is possible not only to provide an intrusion alarm but also provide an exact picture of the infiltration and the damage caused. Contact Switches are changing the way the Burglar Alarms and Anti Theft Systems used to function. Be it the home, office or even a car, magnetic sensors have a role to play in every one of these devices.
Secure Doors and Windows lead to “Secure Homes”. The idea then is to install these magnetic sensors at strategic locations during the construction phase itself. The Magnetic sensors either Solenoid coil type or relay switch type (Similar Principle of operation but construction/assembly of device different) are thus installed inside the door frames. Hinges or even the slim cracks and would provide life time service except for those undergoing severe strain during opening and closing operations. The magnetic sensors of the Surface mount type can also be attached to the door surface and painted as per the door paint scheme for concealment. Magnetic sensors with futuristic designs are expected to provide personal frequencies and modulations that are unique to the person wearing them. A magnetic sensor is here to revolutionize the Personal Security and Identity Theft areas of concern and is here is stay!
